Self-portrait by German Jewish avant-garde artist Anita Ree (1885-1933), who poses semi-nude set against a stylised background of prickly pears, painted c.1922-25. As a Jewish artist, Ree was subject to increasing critical hostility after the Nazis came to power in 1933. She took her own life later that year. The Nazis designated her work as ‘degenerate art’ in 1937 and began purging it from museum collections. Fortunately, those held at the Kunsthalle Hamburg were spared thanks to Wilhelm Werner, a ground-keeper at the musuem, who hid many of her paintings in his apartment.
