Naked Hollywood: Weegee in Los Angeles
Lots of material I had never seen before. In a previous review Robin gives you a good rundown of the photos in the book. This book said Weegee’s original Naked Hollywood was done as a photographic satire. I think Weegee was most successful in that quest. While it is kinda disappointing that the reproduction of the original book was done in the way it was, I guess there was not much choice. If all they had was a 1955 .35 cent vintage paperback that had yellowed with age to draw from, they did the best they could with the material at hand. Outstanding addition to any Weegee collection.
I just attended two photo shows in NYC: WeeGee’s “My business is Murder” and the “Radical photographers” exhibit at the Jewish Museum. Both are excellent and well curated. Riding this B&W and WeeGee wave I ordered the “Naked Hollywood” book to see what WeeGee had done on the WQest Coast and was somewhat disappointed. It consists, mainly, of reproductions of vintage publications rather than actual photos printed for this book. IMHO, quality varies and some are too small ( reproductions!) to really appreciate. Still, it’s another look at WeeGee’s work so it’s always enjoyable;I just expected better.
