The shortcomings of this school of thought can be observed more recently in the popular reaction to Emily in Paris. It’s true that the show is firmly rooted in the American perspective and, for most of season one, relied heavily on stereotypes. However, to accuse the show of being racist towards the French is to blatantly ignore France’s history as an imperialist power. France has power and influence on the world stage. It is not at the mercy of a country like the US and, in fact, has subjected many other countries to oppression and colonization. If we remember that racism is about power structures then we have to admit that there is no structure in place to disadvantage the (white) French in such a way as to allow American prejudice to be in support of something larger. Emily does not have any significant privileges in Paris that stem from her being American but she does have privileges that stem from her whiteness and from the fact that she’s straight and cisgender.
