Throughout Squid Game, three shapes appear over and over: squares, triangles, and circles. They mark the card that Gi-hun is given by the recruiter and also make up the masks worn by the guards. At first, the use of these symbols seems somewhat random, but after a rewatch, it becomes clearer that the shapes not only express a hierarchy among the guards, but they also hint at the players’ final game.
One of the best things to come out of Squid Game Season 2 was the character of Thanos, played by Choi Seung-hyun (aka T.O.P from BIGBANG). Fun, chaotic, and sometimes cruel, . Fans of T.O.P might have spotted some references to him and his work during their initial viewing, such as Thanos’ dance during Mingle, or even how Thanos’s use of drugs connects to . The more times you rewatch, the more references you’ll find to both him and the Marvel villain his character was named after.
Among the guards, , followed by triangles, then circles. Why this is the case isn’t stated, but it seems that more sides equals a higher position, as seen by the many sides of the Front Man’s mask. These shapes also come together to form the Squid Game layout, with players starting on the circle, staying within the boundaries of the square, and trying to reach (or defend) the triangle. It’s possible these shapes will show up in even more ways during Season 3’s ending.
