The word ‘aunty’ hits every Indian woman the hardest. While the Indian woman struggles to keep a balance between work and household chores, being called aunty by a 10-year-old comes as a major blow, especially when you’re only in your late twenties.Whether you’re attending a wedding or shopping at the mall, a couple of children will always bump into you and say ‘sorry aunty’. Before you know, you’ve aged 10 years and piled 5 inches around your waist in your head, just like the idea of the stereotypical aunty you’ve grown up interacting with. For Indian women who are still in their early thirties, it is tough to handle the sudden promotion from ‘didi’ to aunty. Here are 10 problems every woman in India goes through when she is first called aunty.
An Indian aunty in Punjab is seen in a video gone viral, of her showing off with lots of cash, gold jewellery and waving a gun.
A video that has gone viral shows an Indian aunty from Punjab, India, showing off very large amounts of cash and gold jewellery while she travels in the back of a car.
The Indian aunty uses the lyrics of the popular Punjabi song as a means to denote and display her wealth as she sings along:
There is a trend towards street fashion photography, to capture (stylish) folk out and about in their everyday wear. I began this project as a way of challenging how we understand street fashion and, through this, honouring the role of our auntys, particularly in the South Asian diaspora. I am interested in the way fashion is translated by those who are not the “cool and sexy” subjects of this kind of street photography.
With this project, I am curious to know what motivates the clothing choices our auntys make, and how this shifts across borders and life histories. I carry my camera with me and shoot if I see someone I find interesting. On occasion, I will go out to a location specifically looking for auntys to photograph. I did a lot of this in Mumbai, particularly at the Gateway of India on Sunday afternoons, where auntys would come all dressed up for a day out. Mumbai being such a cosmopolitan and busy city, there were auntys from all over India, both travellers or locals. I am currently in the process of photographing aunties in Toronto.
I was having dinner with two Indian women and we began talking in “aunty-speak” (using words and expressions that our auntys use) at which I made a pun that we were “upping the aunty!”. That dinner is where the idea began. “Aunty” is a strong cultural motif for South Asians where any woman at least a generation older becomes an “aunty”. Along with this name reference comes a relationship that becomes a conduit for cultural knowledge.
Most fans would want to see their favourite idols at concerts or fan signs because that seems to be the most probable way of meeting them. But there are some people who encounter these idols by mere chance and leave us all dumbfounded! The same happened back in 2018 when the BTS gang was clicked with an Indian aunty and Desi Army could not keep calm!
Seasoned BTS fans might know that back in 2018, BTS released the third part of their Bon Voyage series and in one of the episodes, Jimin and Jungkook were harmlessly clicking pictures of the gorgeous view in Malta. Eagle-eyed fans were quick to notice the Indian aunty beside them. A photo was of course uploaded on Twitter and so began a series of memes and lamenting. While some joked about wanting to ‘be’ that aunty, others congratulated her for getting this opportunity.
